Healthcare worker linked to Missouri bird flu case shows symptoms, CDC reports

A second health worker in Missouri who had contact with a patient with H5N1 bird flu developed respiratory symptoms but was not tested for influenza, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Missouri patient, who had severe underlying conditions, tested positive for the H5 virus in August and has since recovered. Last week, a healthcare worker who cared for the patient also exhibited symptoms but tested negative for influenza, while a household contact experienced gastrointestinal symptoms. The CDC is investigating the possibility of human-to-human transmission of the virus, although H5 viruses typically do not spread among people. Blood samples have been collected from the patient and their contact for further testing.

Experts are concerned about the timing of these illnesses occurring outside of flu season and without known animal contact. They are investigating possible interactions with wild birds, bird feeders, or consumption of meat or dairy products. The CDC highlighted the importance of determining the source of infection to prevent further spread.

Dr. William Schaffner from Vanderbilt University Medical Center emphasized that limited person-to-person transmission does not necessarily mean the virus has become more easily spreadable. The CDC reported 14 bird flu infections since March, mostly in poultry and dairy workers, amid an outbreak of H5N1 in dairy cows across multiple states. Further testing and investigation are ongoing to understand the potential risks of H5N1 transmission and prevent future infections.
