A gas explosion in a coal mine in Iran’s South Khorasan Province resulted in the death of at least 51 people and left 20 others injured. The incident occurred in two blocks, B and C, of the mine operated by the Madanjoo company. South Khorasan Province governor Ali Akbar Rahimi stated that a majority of the country’s coal comes from this region, with several major companies operating there. The rescue operation in block B has been completed, with 30 fatalities and 17 injuries reported. Rescue efforts in block C are ongoing, with high methane density making the process challenging. Of the 69 workers present during the explosion, 17 were injured, 24 are missing, and 28 were unharmed. The blast happened at 9 p.m. on a Saturday. President Masoud Pezeshkian offered his condolences to the victims’ families and pledged to provide support. The Red Crescent reported that 17 injured individuals were taken to the hospital, while efforts to locate the missing workers continue. The government is prioritizing follow-up actions to address the tragic event.
