Florida placed under hurricane watch as Tropical Storm Helene approaches

A hurricane watch and warnings of storm surges up to 15 feet high were issued for almost all of Florida’s western coastline as Tropical Storm Helene formed over the Caribbean Sea. It is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane and potentially become a major hurricane, reaching the Gulf Coast of Florida by Thursday. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and flash flooding to the region. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 61 counties and urged residents to prepare for the storm by stocking up on supplies, cleaning up yards, and being familiar with evacuation zones. Schools and hospitals in the region have closed, and evacuation orders have been issued in certain areas. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts an extremely active hurricane season, with warmer than average sea surface temperatures fueling the intensification of storms. Human-caused climate change has made warm sea surface temperatures more likely. If Helene becomes a hurricane, it will be the fifth to hit Florida in three years. Residents are being urged to take precautions and stay informed as the storm approaches.
