The United States and the United Arab Emirates have deepened their military ties, with President Joe Biden recognizing the UAE as a “major defense partner” during a White House meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This designation allows for increased defense cooperation and security in the Middle East, East Africa, and the Indian Ocean regions, with joint training and military collaboration planned.
Despite friction over the war in Sudan and escalating tensions in the Middle East, the two countries are working together to de-escalate conflicts in the region. The US has been criticized for not using its leverage to calm tensions, including billions in military aid to Israel. The leaders also discussed the need for UN humanitarian aid in Gaza, where thousands of Palestinians have been killed in an ongoing Israeli offensive.
The UAE has been vocal in condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza, putting it at odds with the US in the UN Security Council. However, both countries are committed to post-war recovery plans in Gaza and a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. The leaders also addressed the conflict in Sudan, with both emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution and compliance with international humanitarian law.
Despite concerns over the UAE’s alleged role in the war in Sudan, the US is moving forward with deepening military cooperation. Five US lawmakers have called on Biden to use Washington’s leverage to seek a change of course in Sudan, but the White House has stated that a military solution is not the answer. Vice President Kamala Harris also expressed deep concerns about the conflict in Sudan during a separate meeting with the UAE president.
