Tens of thousands of people in southern Lebanon have fled their homes as Israel intensifies its aerial offensive following a deadly exchange with Hezbollah. The death toll in Lebanon has risen to over 500, with many fleeing to seek shelter in Beirut. European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned that the situation is extremely dangerous and could escalate further. Israeli military Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said that Israel will continue to operate at full force. The U.S. does not support Israel’s strategy of escalating to de-escalate the conflict with Hezbollah, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken is working with international partners to find a way to resolve the situation. The conflict has led to a devastating impact on children and families in Lebanon, which has already been under strain due to an economic crisis, the Beirut explosion, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the growing tension, UNICEF has warned against any further escalation, as the conflict could have catastrophic consequences for the region.
