Helene made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph. The storm strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane earlier in the day before moving quickly inland. Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina declared emergencies ahead of landfall, and flooding is a concern in several states. Helene was predicted to have a wind swath over 400 miles wide and bring “unsurvivable” storm surge. The system became a tropical storm earlier in the week in the western Caribbean Sea and caused flooding in the Cayman Islands. Live updates on Hurricane Helene are available as the storm continues to move inland.
