Republican candidate for US president Donald Trump has made claims that he could quickly negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. He announced that he would be meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday in New York, following criticism of Zelenskyy’s leadership and doubts about Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian aggression. This announcement came hours after President Joe Biden pledged over $8 billion in military aid to Ukraine and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris met with Zelenskyy to offer support.
Trump has questioned the level of US support for Ukraine and suggested that the country should have made a deal with Russia when the invasion began in February. Despite this, he has expressed confidence in his ability to broker a peace deal. Harris, on the other hand, has warned against proposals that would require Ukraine to cede territory to Russia.
Zelenskyy had expressed a desire to meet with Trump in order to present his “victory plan” to end the war. However, Trump had initially seemed reluctant to meet with the Ukrainian leader, particularly after Zelenskyy’s critical comments about him in a recent interview. The two leaders have not met in person since Trump’s term as president ended in 2021.
Trump’s meeting with Zelenskyy comes amidst ongoing tensions between the US and Russia over the conflict in Ukraine. The outcome of this meeting could have significant implications for the future of the war and US foreign policy towards the region.
