The film “Rust” is set to make its world premiere at the Camerimage Festival in Poland next month, three years after the tragic shooting on set that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The Western drama, produced and starring Alec Baldwin, was mired in scandal and legal troubles following the shooting, with Baldwin and the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, facing legal action. The festival will honor Hutchins’ memory and legacy with a screening of the film followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers involved.
The filmmakers will discuss the challenges of continuing production after Hutchins’ death and the importance of maintaining her artistic vision. Hutchins’ story will also lead a conversation on the role of women in cinematography and safety on set. Baldwin, who was charged with involuntary manslaughter, had the charges dropped twice, with the judge dismissing the case with prejudice in July. Gutierrez-Reed, on the other hand, was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Despite her lawyer’s attempt to have the charge dismissed following Baldwin’s mistrial, the judge upheld her conviction. The premiere of “Rust” at the festival will serve as a way to remember Halyna Hutchins and the impact of her tragic death on the film industry.
