The United States is amidst a divisive campaign season, but a vice presidential debate provided some lighthearted moments of camaraderie and peace. “Saturday Night Live” recreated the debate between Sen. JD Vance and Gov. Tim Walz, with Heidi Gardner playing the moderator Norah O’Donnell. Walz, played by Jim Gaffigan, was portrayed as a former teacher with a stack of papers to grade. Vance, played by Bowen Yang, tried to answer important questions with a sense of humor. The two candidates found common ground and even seemed to think alike on some issues, surprising everyone watching, including Vice President Harris and President Biden on television. Ultimately, Walz threw a “hail Mary” question at Vance about Donald Trump losing the election, to which Vance dodged skillfully. The debate ended in a comedic victory for both candidates, as Walz celebrated a touchdown and Harris and Emhoff claimed a successful soundbite. The episode was hosted by Nate Bargatze and featured a musical performance by Coldplay. Despite the political tension in the country, the “SNL” recreation of the vice presidential debate provided a moment of humor and light-heartedness during a challenging campaign season.
