‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch pays tribute to classic Spanish-language show ‘Sábado Gigante,’ sparking nostalgia among fans

Joshua, a character on Saturday Night Live, accidentally summons a character named El Chacal de la Trompeta, also known as The Trumpet Jackal, while trying to understand directions from Don Francisco. El Chacal de la Trompeta was a character from the popular Spanish-language variety show “Sábado Gigante,” known for being a harsh judge in singing competitions. Viewers praised how well SNL captured the over-the-top and eccentric nature of “Sábado Gigante” in the skit, with many expressing nostalgia for the show. SNL writer Steven Castillo, who is Mexican American, tweeted a shoutout to families who remember watching the show. Don Francisco, the host of “Sábado Gigante,” also thanked SNL for bringing back memories of the show, calling it a meeting point for Hispanic families. “Sábado Gigante” held the Guinness World Record for the longest-running variety TV show hosted by the same presenter and was hugely popular among Hispanics in the U.S. The show ended nearly 10 years ago, but the love and respect for it remains strong. SNL and NBC News share a parent company, NBCUniversal.
