Military drills conducted by China around Taiwan aim to deter independence movements

China conducted large-scale military drills around Taiwan as a warning to “independence forces” on the island following criticism of a speech by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te. The exercises are meant to test the joint operations capability of the Chinese army, navy, air force, and rocket force, approaching Taiwan from different directions. Taiwan’s National Defense Ministry called the war games “irrational” and “provocative,” while the Mainland Affairs Council stated that the existence of the Republic of China is undeniable and Lai expressed goodwill in his address. Despite China ramping up military activities around Taiwan, most people in Taiwan believe that China is unlikely to invade in the next five years. Lai emphasized Taiwan’s democracy and freedom, asserting that China has no right to represent Taiwan and pledging to resist annexation or encroachment upon sovereignty. Chinese officials accused Lai of advancing Taiwan independence for his political interests. The situation reflects ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan, with China asserting sovereignty over Taiwan while Taiwan maintains its independence.
