Coos Bay World to Participate in Great Oregon Shakeout Earthquake Drill on Oct. 17

Coos Bay residents are encouraged to join the nationwide earthquake drill, the Great Oregon Shakeout, on October 17. The annual event aims to raise awareness about earthquake preparedness and safety measures in the event of a quake. Participants will practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” techniques to protect themselves during an earthquake.

The drill is especially important for Oregon residents, as the state sits along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a major fault line that poses a significant earthquake risk. Experts predict that a major earthquake, known as “The Big One,” could hit the region in the future, causing widespread destruction and devastation. By participating in the Shakeout drill, residents can better prepare themselves for such an event and reduce the potential for injuries and damage.

Organized by the Oregon Office of Emergency Management, the Great Oregon Shakeout encourages individuals, schools, businesses, and organizations to practice their emergency response plans and communication strategies during the drill. By rehearsing these plans, participants can ensure they are well-prepared to respond quickly and efficiently in the event of an actual earthquake.

Residents can join the Shakeout drill by registering online and participating in the simulation at 10:17 AM on October 17. By taking part in this important event, Coos Bay residents can help protect themselves and their community in the event of a major earthquake. Additionally, the drill serves as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness and the need to have a plan in place for such emergencies.
