Caracal on the loose in Chicago suburbs discovered hiding under deck of home

A caracal that had been on the loose in suburban Chicago was captured after nearly 24 hours, with police locating the large cat under a deck of a residence in Hoffman Estates. The caracal was unharmed and was taken into custody before being brought to The Valley of the Kings Sanctuary and Retreat in Wisconsin for a healthy and happy life away from the suburban neighborhood. The village had warned residents about the presence of the exotic cat, which was not native to the United States, and had asked for caution and not to attempt to feed the animal. Caracals are endangered species native to Africa and Asia, known for preying on small mammals and birds. The police department had received hundreds of comments on their Facebook post asking for information about the whereabouts or owner of the large cat. The capture of the caracal was handled by at least six officers with the cat jumping around inside a cage before being safely secured. Photos and video after the capture showed the tan cat laying quietly in the cage on the flatbed of a pickup truck.
