Relatives of Menendez Brothers to Gather Outside L.A. Courthouse as District Attorney Considers Resentencing

The extended family of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were found guilty of killing their parents almost three decades ago, is expected to gather outside a Los Angeles courthouse for a news conference as the district attorney considers whether the brothers should be resentenced and possibly released. The district attorney, George Gascón, has stated that a decision has not yet been made regarding the Menendez case. The brothers’ defense lawyer, Mark Geragos, and celebrity advocate Rosie O’Donnell will be present at the news conference.

Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1989 for the murder of their parents. The recent review of their case has sparked renewed interest in the story, especially since the release of a Netflix miniseries and a documentary that detail the brothers’ claims of abuse at the hands of their father. The prosecution argued that they killed their parents for monetary gain.

Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Rosie O’Donnell have expressed support for the brothers’ potential release, citing unfair treatment by the prosecution and media in the 1990s. George Gascón, who was elected on a reformist platform, has already resentenced over 300 individuals during his term with few instances of recidivism. The decision in the Menendez case will ultimately be made in the court of law rather than in the court of public opinion.
