Sapelo Island, home to a Gullah Geechee enclave, has been the subject of a contentious battle between residents and the government over development regulations. Residents have accused the government of attempting to push them off the island with taxes and regulations favoring luxury accommodations. A lawsuit aimed at nullifying new regulations was dismissed earlier this year. Plaintiffs are now seeking intervention from the state Supreme Court.
Amidst the tragedy, the Gullah Geechee community has vowed to support the survivors and families of the victims. Some residents have called for a federal investigation into the collapse of the gangway, expressing concerns over government neglect and oversight. The incident has brought renewed attention to the longstanding fight for the preservation of the Gullah Geechee heritage on Sapelo Island.
