Tragedy struck in Jackson County on Monday evening when a pedestrian chasing a puppy onto Highway 62 was struck and killed by a vehicle. Oregon State Police responded to the scene near milepost 13, where Yesica Valenzuela-Quezada, 29, of Eagle Point, was hit by an eastbound Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Melissa Ann Marie Love, 45, also of Eagle Point. Valenzuela-Quezada was pronounced dead at the scene, while Love escaped unharmed.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Valenzuela-Quezada had followed the puppy onto the highway from a nearby residence, leading to the fatal collision. The incident caused a three-hour disruption on the highway as authorities conducted their investigation. Love stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, with assistance provided by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Fire Districts 3 and 4, Eagle Point Police Department, and ODOT.
