Democrat Janelle Bynum has made history by becoming Oregon’s first Black member of Congress after flipping the state’s 5th Congressional District in the 2022 midterm elections. Bynum, a state representative backed by national Democrats, defeated GOP incumbent Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who conceded the race following the announcement of Bynum’s victory.
In a statement, Bynum expressed pride in her accomplishment and emphasized the importance of working together to achieve their goals. The Cook Political Report had labeled the race as a toss-up, highlighting the competitive nature of the contest.
The district, which had been redrawn after the 2020 census, encompasses a diverse range of regions including metro Portland, its suburbs, rural areas, and the city of Bend. Despite a larger number of registered Democratic voters, unaffiliated voters make up the largest constituency in the district.
The election was not without controversy, as a ballot box in Multnomah County was set on fire by an incendiary device prior to the voting. Authorities linked this incident to two other ballot box fires in neighboring Washington, raising concerns about potential election interference.
Bynum’s victory marks a significant milestone in Oregon’s political landscape and underscores the importance of diverse representation in Congress. As the first Black member of Oregon’s congressional delegation, Bynum’s win signals a shift in the state’s political dynamics and serves as a source of inspiration for future generations.
