Community Comes Together for Vigil Honoring Joshua James McCoy
North Bend, OREGON – A heart-wrenching vigil was held Saturday night in North Bend to honor Joshua James (J.J.) McCoy, a joyful 5-year-old boy with autism who was tragically found dead near his Coos County home last week, three days after he was reported missing. The emotional ceremony coincided with what would have been J.J.’s sixth birthday, heightening the sense of loss felt by family and friends.
J.J.’s uncle, Joshua McCoy, who resides in Ohio, shared fond memories of the child, describing him as a happy, adventurous boy who loved to climb. The family is grappling with grief; McCoy expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the local community, which includes comforting messages from daycares and residents alike. Activities at the vigil included a candlelight ceremony and a motorcycle and jeep ride involving local law enforcement.
The Coos County Sheriff’s Office discovered J.J.’s body approximately 1.5 miles from his home. According to reports, his mother had fallen asleep and, upon waking, found her son missing. Nor has the sheriff’s office disclosed further details surrounding J.J.’s death, stating that the cause remains unknown and that the investigation is ongoing. At this time, no arrests have been made.
The family is contemplating hiring a private investigator to delve deeper into the circumstances of J.J.’s untimely passing. “Now is a time for healing and remembrance,” the sheriff’s office remarked, urging the community to come together in support of J.J.’s family during this tragic time.
