Judge Denies Motion to Unseal Documents in Oregon Nurse’s Murder Case
HONOLULU – A judge has ruled against a motion to publicly release documents related to the case of Bryce Schubert, the 27-year-old accused of kidnapping and murdering Melissa Jubane, a 32-year-old nurse with ties to Hawaii. Jubane, who had recently married on Oahu, was reported missing, and her body was later found; however, few details about her death have been disclosed.
The ruling followed a hearing in a crowded courtroom, where supporters of Jubane filled the hallways. Several Portland media outlets sought to unseal critical search warrants and affidavits, hoping to shed light on the case amidst the limited information provided by authorities.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Jeff Lesowski argued against the motion, stating that releasing the affidavits could disrupt the ongoing investigation. “It would unleash an army of people… who would be tracking down key important witnesses, some of whom are terrified of being involved,” he stated, highlighting concerns that the release could jeopardize the legal process.
Conversely, Tim Cunningham, representing the media organizations, emphasized the public’s right to access court-filed documents, referring to them as essential materials within the judicial process. "What we are talking about here… are core adjudicative materials that underlie the administration of justice," he contended.
Ultimately, the judge decided to keep the records sealed, citing potential interference with the investigation and ensuring the integrity of the case. Schubert is facing multiple charges including murder, kidnapping, and abuse of a corpse, with a trial scheduled for September 2025. The case continues to garner significant public interest as it unfolds.
