Oregon Reaches Milestone of Over 102,000 Electric Vehicles
PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon has hit a significant milestone with 102,461 electric vehicles (EVs) now registered, showcasing remarkable growth in the adoption of green technology. Over the past decade, the state’s EV registrations have surged from approximately 5,500 in 2013 to 27,000 five years ago, highlighting a dramatic increase in electric vehicle usage.
Kris Strickler, director of the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), commended this progress during a recent announcement. He emphasized the state’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle infrastructure and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Alongside ODOT, representatives from the Oregon Departments of Energy and Environmental Quality discussed the environmental benefits accompanying this surge in EV registrations.
A recent initiative introduced charging stations just four months ago has already shown significant results, reportedly reducing over 2,600 pounds of CO2 emissions from the local atmosphere. Erin Graham, president and CEO of ONTEAM, highlighted that the impact of these stations is comparable to eliminating the need for 12 barrels of oil and over 500 gallons of traditional fuel.
As transportation is identified as the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Oregon, accounting for more than a third of the state’s total emissions, officials stress the necessity for continued efforts to mitigate climate change. Janine Benner, director of the Oregon Department of Energy (ODOE), confirmed the state aims to have 250,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2025, underscoring the ambitious goals set to further drive down emissions and support a sustainable future.
With ongoing investments in electric vehicle infrastructure, Oregon is solidifying its position as a leader in environmental stewardship and innovation.
