Amid the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, the embassy instructed employees to shelter in place and recommended U.S. citizens do the same if an air alert is announced. The closure of the embassy is not uncommon during the conflict, which recently marked its 1,000th day. The Ukrainian capital was targeted by Russian drones, resulting in casualties and a fire in a residential building. Russian aerial attacks have caused numerous deaths and blackouts in Ukraine. In response to Ukraine carrying out a strike on Russian territory with U.S.-supplied weapons, Russia revised its nuclear doctrine to lower the threshold for using nuclear weapons. President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow could justify a nuclear strike if attacked by a nonnuclear country supported by a nuclear country. The situation remains tense as both sides engage in escalating military actions.
