Brooklyn Man Hailed as a “Walking Miracle” After Successfully Managing Diabetes

Brooklyn native Samuel Rios’s unhealthy eating habits led to a frightening diabetes diagnosis at the age of 44. After a scare in the Emergency Room, where doctors warned him of the consequences of his lifestyle, Samuel enrolled in the Lifestyle Medicine Program at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull in March 2024. After six months in the program, Samuel was able to significantly improve his health, lowering his A1C levels and losing 45 pounds. This transformation was made possible with the support of a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, including Dr. Gül Bahtiyar, Health Coach Stephanie Vasquez, and registered dietitians.

The Lifestyle Medicine Program at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull has been successful in helping individuals like Samuel adopt healthier lifestyle choices and live longer lives. Through a combination of dietary changes, mindfulness practices, and adapted exercises, patients in the program receive comprehensive support to make lasting changes to their health.

Samuel’s story of transformation has inspired his family to make changes as well and has motivated him to share his journey in the hopes of inspiring others. He now considers himself a walking miracle and hopes to be a voice encouraging others to make positive changes in their lives through programs like the NYC Health + Hospitals Lifestyle Medicine Program. His success story is a testament to the power of lifestyle changes in improving health outcomes and overall well-being.
