Chains Required for I-5 Traffic North of Redding and South of Oregon as Storm Hits Area

Press Release: Winter Storm Causes Major Traffic Disruptions on Interstate 5 and Northern California Highways

Redding, CA – A powerful winter storm has led to significant disruptions on Interstate 5 (I-5) and other highways across Northern California as of late Wednesday night. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) reported that all vehicles traveling on I-5 north of Redding are now being screened for tire chains after the freeway was shut down earlier in the day due to severe weather conditions characterized by rain, snow, and damaging winds.

Located approximately 10 miles north of Redding in Shasta County, metering of northbound traffic began as authorities conducted checks at Fawndale. Similarly, vehicles traveling southbound at Edgewood, roughly 23 miles south of Yreka near the Oregon border, are also required to have chains in preparation for further snow accumulation.

Some North State highways remain impassable due to blizzard-like conditions which have resulted in downed trees and stalled vehicles. During the storm, Highway 299 experienced a complete closure east of Buckhorn Summit due to a big rig that spun out, although it has since reopened.

Caltrans continues to advise drivers to carry tire chains and to use them as required throughout the storm, which is currently projected to last through Saturday.

Highway conditions in Shasta and Siskiyou counties remain challenging: northbound Highway 3 is closed at Scott Mountain, and spin-outs have created hazardous conditions on various stretches of Highway 299. Moreover, all southbound lanes on Highway 97 are blocked south of Macdoel due to heavy snow accumulation.

Authorities urge motorists to exercise caution and stay updated on road conditions as they navigate this severe weather event.

This report is updated with the latest developments regarding the winter storm and its impact on local transportation.
