The Monterey Police Department released documents detailing an investigation into sexual assault allegations against Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for defense secretary in 2017. The woman, identified as “Jane Doe,” claimed that Hegseth sexually assaulted her after meeting at an event in Monterey. Hegseth denies any wrongdoing, and no charges were filed as the police found the allegations to be false. Hegseth admitted to a settlement with his accuser, stating that she extorted him for money. The Trump transition team did not comment on the matter. The woman reported that she was drinking at a bar with Hegseth before losing consciousness and finding herself in an unknown room, where Hegseth allegedly sexually assaulted her. Hegseth claimed that the encounter was consensual, but the woman said she does not remember consenting to anything. The woman sought a sexual assault exam at a hospital four days later. This incident is one of three allegations of sexual impropriety against high-profile Cabinet picks by Trump. Hegseth’s attorney maintains that the investigation confirmed the falseness of the allegations.
