Republicans on the House Oversight Committee plan to create a subcommittee chaired by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to work with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy on President-elect Donald Trump’s new advisory group, the “Department of Government Efficiency,” starting in January. The goal of the subcommittee is to eliminate government waste, streamline operations, and cut red tape in order to help create jobs and reduce costs for Americans. The committee, Greene, and the Trump team have not yet commented on the announcement. Musk and Ramaswamy, who will be serving as outside volunteers, have been tasked with leading the initiative to slash federal spending and regulations, with a focus on working with the White House Office of Management and Budget. They have stated that they will not just write reports, but will actually work to cut costs. Greene, who previously faced consequences for spreading dangerous conspiracy theories, has been a member of the Oversight Committee since 2023 when Republicans regained the House majority. The initiative, referred to as “DOGE,” is named after an internet meme and a cryptocurrency that has been boosted by Musk.
