Portland Fifth Grader Named 2025 Oregon Kid Governor
Portland, OR – A bright young leader from Portland has been selected as the 2025 Oregon Kid Governor. Fifth grader Maya Johnson from Maplewood Elementary emerged victorious in a statewide election that encourages students to engage in civic leadership and propose solutions to community issues.
Maya, who ran on a platform focusing on environmental sustainability and mental health awareness, gathered support from her peers by presenting her vision in a compelling campaign video and participating actively in debates. "I want to ensure that all kids understand the importance of taking care of our planet and each other’s mental health," Maya stated after being announced as the Kid Governor.
The Kid Governor program, organized by the Oregon Secretary of State’s office, aims to provide students with a hands-on understanding of government and the electoral process. This year, students from across Oregon submitted their applications and campaigns, with many focusing on pressing issues such as climate change, education reform, and social justice.
Maya will spend her term advocating for her initiatives, which include community clean-up events, increased school resources for mental health programs, and youth-led discussions on environmental impact. Her first official task will be to represent Oregon at the National Kid Governor Summit, where she will connect with her peers from other states and share her insights and ideas.
