Intermountain Health and the Billings YMCA have partnered to offer a year-long program aimed at reducing Montana’s diabetes rates and preventing future diagnoses. With over 38 million Americans having diabetes in 2021, including 77,000 in Montana, the program is crucial in addressing this growing health issue. The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) focuses on lifestyle changes, diet modification, and overall healthier habits to prevent and manage diabetes.
One participant, Jason Newell, shared his experience with the program, highlighting the importance of accountability and small, sustainable changes. Under the guidance of a professional dietitian, participants like Newell learn ways to reduce weight and risk factors associated with diabetes and heart disease. The program includes structured lectures on nutrition and exercise classes with fitness trainers. Financial assistance is available for the $175 program fee.
Despite initial challenges, participants find ways to make health a fun and enjoyable part of their lives. By engaging in activities like water aerobics, walking, and swimming, they discover the benefits of staying active. Fitness instructors emphasize finding enjoyable and sustainable forms of exercise to build healthy habits. Through the DPP, participants like Newell have seen positive changes in their health and overall wellbeing, making it a valuable resource in the fight against diabetes in Montana.
