U.S. Senator Ron Wyden Critiques Trump’s Cabinet Picks and Proposed Tariffs Impacting Oregon
PORTLAND, Ore. — In a recent episode of "Straight Talk," U.S. Senator Ron Wyden addressed President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet selections and potential tariffs while emphasizing their consequences for trade-dependent Oregon.
With Trump beginning to assemble his cabinet nearly four weeks post-election, Wyden is cautious. He voiced concern about Trump’s approach to Senate confirmations, particularly noting his intention to bypass traditional processes. Wyden stated, “We’re not going to stand for something that turns the United States Senate into door mats,” as he prepares to scrutinize key appointments, including Oregon’s Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Labor Secretary and Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, highlighting their previous bipartisanship.
On the topic of tariffs, Trump has threatened a 25% tariff on products from Mexico and Canada and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. Wyden emphasized the adverse effects these tariffs could have on Oregon’s economy. Oregon relies heavily on international trade, with around $30 billion in exports and one in four jobs tied to this sector. Wyden warned that the tariffs, contrary to popular belief that foreign nations would bear the costs, are likely to increase prices for consumers and fuel inflation.
Additionally, Wyden expressed determination to challenge proposed rate hikes by Portland General Electric (PGE), which requested a 10.9% increase for 2025, marking the third consecutive year of increases. "These rate hikes are hitting Oregonians like a wrecking ball," he stated, committing to intervene until the hikes are halted.
As discussions unfold around Trump’s administration, Wyden’s unyielding advocacy for Oregonians remains clear, addressing both federal and utility challenges directly impacting constituents. "Straight Talk" airs on weekends and is available as a podcast.
