Appeals court agrees to dismiss Trump’s case concerning classified documents

The appeals court has dismissed charges against Donald Trump related to mishandling of classified documents, ending Special Counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution. The charges, first made in June 2023, alleged that Trump retained national defense information after leaving office and directed the deletion of security video at his Mar-a-Lago resort. The special counsel’s office also sought to dismiss charges related to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, which a judge granted. This decision was expected due to long-standing Justice Department policy that a sitting president cannot be prosecuted. The remaining criminal cases against Trump, involving hush money payments in New York and election interference in Georgia, are also in limbo. Trump’s attorneys argue that he should be protected by presidential immunity in the New York case, where he was found guilty of falsifying business records. In response to the dismissals, Trump continues to claim that the prosecutions were politically motivated and pleads not guilty. Investigations into the remaining cases have been delayed due to conflict of interest allegations against the prosecutors. Trump claims victory in navigating through the legal challenges, asserting that the cases against him were baseless and should never have been brought.
