Central Oregon Avalanche Center Launches Scholarship for Winter Sports Safety Education

The Central Oregon Avalanche Center is proud to announce the opening of applications for the Alex Kollar and Jillian Webster Memorial Scholarship. This initiative is designed to support local backcountry winter sports enthusiasts, including skiers, snowboarders, and snowshoers, in enhancing their avalanche education and safety skills.

The scholarship aims to provide recipients with access to vital courses focused on avalanche risk assessment and safety protocols, equipping outdoor enthusiasts with essential life-saving knowledge. Bryce Kellogg, president of the Central Oregon Avalanche Center, emphasized the scholarship’s purpose of eliminating financial barriers that often restrict access to crucial winter safety training. "It’s a great way to pay forward their enthusiasm for the outdoors and to break down barriers to people accessing the outdoors in a safe way," Kellogg remarked.

Courses funded by the scholarship delve into recognizing key avalanche warning signs and comprehending the inherent risks associated with winter backcountry activities. By ensuring that individuals can afford these educational opportunities, the Central Oregon Avalanche Center hopes to promote a safer outdoor experience for all.

Interested applicants must submit their applications by December 1 to be considered for the scholarship. The initiative is open to any Central Oregon outdoor enthusiast eager to improve their winter backcountry safety education.

For more information about the scholarship and the application process, individuals are encouraged to contact the Central Oregon Avalanche Center via email. This scholarship represents a significant step forward in fostering a culture of safety and preparedness in Central Oregon’s winter sports community.
