John Phelan, a businessman with no military background, chosen by Trump to serve as Secretary of the Navy

President-elect Donald Trump has chosen businessman and investor John Phelan, who has no military experience, to become the next Secretary of the Navy. If confirmed, Phelan would be the first person in 15 years to lead the Navy without having served in the armed forces. Trump praised Phelan’s record of success and leadership qualities, highlighting his experience as the founder of Rugger Management LLC and his Harvard Business School education. Phelan would oversee a large staff and budget as Navy Secretary. Previous Navy Secretaries have typically had military backgrounds, with most being veterans. Trump also announced the nomination of Pete Hegseth, a combat veteran and former Fox News host, as Secretary of Defense. Hegseth has served in the Army National Guard and has combat experience in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Guantánamo Bay. The selection of Phelan and Hegseth as leaders of the U.S. Navy and Defense departments, respectively, represents a departure from the tradition of appointing individuals with military backgrounds to these positions.
