Nourishing the Community: South Lincoln Resources Provides Thanksgiving Meals Amid Rising Food Insecurity in Oregon

Waldport, OR – South Lincoln Resources made a significant impact Saturday by distributing three boxes of food to 216 families, helping to feed 680 individuals in need for Thanksgiving. This outreach underscores a troubling trend highlighted in a recent Oregon State University (OSU) study, which has revealed a rise in food insecurity affecting nearly 13% of Oregonians—approximately 530,000 people—since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study, released in 2023, indicates that although hunger rates dropped before the pandemic, they surged due to job losses and reduced income, adding about 65,000 more individuals facing food insecurity from 2021 to 2023. Vulnerable populations include renters, single mothers, and those living in rural areas, where food insecurity rates reach 21%, compared to 12% in urban settings.

Community organizations like the Oregon Food Bank are combating these issues, with over 40 groups recently advocating against cuts to federal food aid ahead of the stalled farm bill negotiations. The House Agriculture Committee proposed a $30 billion reduction in nutritional assistance, raising concerns about its impact on programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which supports around 680,000 Oregonians annually.

Experts like OSU’s Mark Edwards emphasize the unique challenges Oregon faces regarding food insecurity, highlighting the correlation between housing costs and food access. As housing affordability remains an ongoing issue, advocates are urging lawmakers to consider comprehensive strategies to address the crisis.

In light of these challenges, the Oregon Hunger Task Force, including lawmakers and advocates, is developing a roadmap to tackle food insecurity, promoting accessible and culturally appropriate food solutions. This ongoing effort aims to ensure that resources are available to those in need, especially as holiday seasons accentuate disparities.
