Three Americans that were being held in China are now free

Three American citizens, Mark Swidan, Kai Li, and John Leung, who had been detained in China, were released according to a State Department spokesperson. Li, 70, from Long Island, New York, was sentenced to 10 years in 2018 on espionage charges, Swidan, a Texas businessman, was sentenced to death with a reprieve in 2019 on drug-related charges, and Leung, an American in his 70s, was sentenced to life in prison on espionage charges.

The families of the released Americans expressed gratitude for their impending return home. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had worked closely with Li’s son, Harrison Li, to advocate for his release. The announcement follows the surprise release of American pastor David Lin in September, who the U.S. had classified as wrongfully detained.

The families of other American detainees in China, including Nelson Wells Jr. and Dawn Hunt, are still awaiting the return of their loved ones. The slow progress in their release has been a cause of frustration, especially as major prisoner exchanges with other countries have been negotiated. Many families have not made their cases public for fear it could hinder efforts to bring their loved ones home.

The Biden administration has raised the issue of Americans detained in China in meetings with Chinese officials, including discussions between President Biden and President Xi Jinping. Despite the release of Swidan, Li, and Leung, the issue of Americans detained in China remains a concern, with the State Department classifying a handful of cases as wrongfully detained.
