Oregon Department of Human Services publicly discloses names involved in St. Helens abuse and neglect cases amidst district scandal

The Oregon Department of Human Services has released the names of teachers and staff at St. Helens High School and Middle School who are currently under investigation for sexual abuse and negligent misconduct. The individuals being investigated include Mark Collins, Eric Stearns, Katy Wagner, Carla Pletsch, Desmond Stoudamier, and Scot Stockwell.

There were no prior reports against these staff members between July 2019 and October 2024, and no previous reports of safety concerns at St. Helens High School before October of this year. The school was closed from November 14-17 following the arrest of former staff members Stearns and Collins for sexual abuse. Community members reported that the closure was for a staff workday to learn how to properly handle such allegations.

Officials are also investigating a teacher at St. Helens Middle School for misconduct, although the name and nature of the alleged crimes have not been released. Authorities are urging anyone who suspects ongoing child abuse or neglect to contact the Oregon Child Abuse Hotline at 1-855-503-SAFE (7233).

The scandals at St. Helens School District have sparked outrage and concern among community members, as the investigation continues into the alleged misconduct.
