Medrick Burnett Jr., a 20-year-old football player at Alabama A&M University, died after suffering a head injury during a game against Alabama State in October. Burnett, a redshirt freshman linebacker, had transferred to Alabama A&M from Grambling and had played in seven games this season. The cause and manner of his death have not been released, but he was pronounced dead on Wednesday by the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner Office. The university initially issued a statement declaring Burnett’s death, but later retracted it, calling it an “unfortunate occurrence” after being informed by a family member that Burnett had passed away. The university did not provide any further comment on the matter.
