Oregon Expands Online Driver Knowledge Tests to Eight Languages

Oregon’s Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) division has enhanced accessibility for aspiring drivers by introducing online knowledge tests in eight languages, aligning with those available at DMV office terminals. This initiative includes Arabic, simplified Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Vietnamese, complementing existing offerings in English and Spanish since October 2023.

While the majority of test-takers still opt for in-person examinations, over 23,000 individuals utilized the online testing alternative in its inaugural year, reflecting a growing interest in virtual options. The state maintained a uniform fee of $7 for the online test parallel to in-person fees.

To take the online test, candidates must use a computer equipped with a functioning webcam, as mobile devices, including phones and tablets, are not supported. Additionally, test-takers under 18 years old are required to have an adult supervisor who is at least 21 years of age present during the testing process.

Successful candidates must still visit a DMV office to validate their identification documents and complete a vision test. This streamlined process supports Oregon’s commitment to making driver education and testing more accessible for its diverse population.
