10 candidates secure election to Portland City Council, with 2 races still too close to call

At least 10 candidates have secured election to the Portland City Council following the release of near-final results. Among the winners are former council members, candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, and those recommended by the Portland Metro Chamber and the Northwest Labor Council. The winners represent a diverse group, with six being women and five people of color. The age range for the winners is from 28 to 70, with three being renters.

There is still uncertainty surrounding the outcome of two races, with candidates from both progressive and pro-business flanks vying for seats. Notably, former Portland Commissioner Steve Novick and former TriMet official Olivia Clark have already secured victories. The new City Council will be made up of individuals with backgrounds in environmental justice, policy management, education, and more.

The election used a ranked-choice voting system, allowing voters to choose multiple candidates. This resulted in the elections of candidates from various political leanings. Several candidates who raised significant funds for their campaigns were unsuccessful in securing seats. The upcoming City Council, consisting of 12 members, will have significant policy-making authority in Portland’s new form of government.

Proponents of the ranked-choice voting system believe it better represents diverse political preferences and leads to winners who are more reflective of the electorate. The remaining votes to be tallied could potentially impact the outcome of the races that are still too close to call. The new City Council members will face the task of addressing important issues such as homelessness, education, and city governance in the coming term.
