The Groucho Club, once a celebrity hotspot in London, has had its license suspended by Westminster City Council following a request from the Metropolitan Police. The reason for the closure, related to a serious criminal offense, remains undisclosed. The club, known for its infamous parties and famous clientele, such as Princess Diana, Kate Moss, and Ant and Dec, has a history of allegations of illegal activities, including drug availability in the past.
Established in 1985 as a modern and inclusive alternative to traditional gentlemen’s clubs, The Groucho Club quickly became a hub for creatives and celebrities. Over the years, it attracted high-profile visitors like Rod Stewart, Freddie Mercury, and Keira Knightly. However, a decline in its reputation began with the retirement of Bernie Katz, the club’s front-of-house manager, and the subsequent changes in management. Complaints from members about rising costs and a loss of the club’s unique charm further signaled its downfall.
Recently, the club was acquired by Artfarm for a reported £40m, but ongoing issues, including a defunct old membership committee, have plagued its reputation. A letter circulated among members stated that the club was “almost dead,” indicating dissatisfaction with its current state.
