Former UFC fighter and Oregon political player Chael Sonnen has announced ambitions to run for governor, significantly raising eyebrows across the state’s political landscape. A decade ago, Sonnen, known for his charismatic personality and brash rhetoric, made headlines when he won the Republican nomination for an Oregon House seat but withdrew amid a money laundering indictment.
In a recent interview, Sonnen emphasized his firm intent, stating, “I’m going to be governor of Oregon a lot sooner than a lot of people in Oregon think.” Although he has not confirmed whether his candidacy will be in the 2026 election cycle, his re-emergence indicates a serious interest in re-entering Oregon politics.
Despite his ambitions, Sonnen faces challenges, particularly his controversial past, including a 2011 guilty plea for money laundering related to mortgage fraud and various legal issues following his UFC retirement.
