Penn State Set for Big Ten Championship Showdown Against Top-Ranked Oregon
In a surprising turn of events, the Penn State Nittany Lions will be making their first appearance in the Big Ten Championship game since 2016, following Michigan’s unexpected victory over Ohio State. This opens the door for Penn State to compete against the formidable Oregon Ducks, who have held the No. 1 ranking since mid-October.
Head coach James Franklin emphasized the importance of this championship opportunity, stating, "What we’re all trying to do is to compete for championships… It’ll be a great environment against a tremendous opponent that’s been deserving of their ranking."
Oregon, ranked first in the nation, has showcased an impressive season with key victories against Ohio State (32-31) and Boise State (37-34), and decisive wins over Michigan (39-17) and Illinois (38-9). Both Penn State and Oregon have consistently defeated common opponents, including dominating wins against Washington, Purdue, and Maryland.
Statistically, Penn State’s offense averages 33.3 points per game, slightly trailing Oregon’s 35.2. Defensively, Penn State ranks sixth in the nation by allowing just 14.0 points per game, narrowly ahead of Oregon’s ninth place with 16.1. Franklin praised Oregon’s disruptive defensive front, acknowledging the challenge they pose.
Meanwhile, running back Nick Singleton has rebounded after a slow stretch earlier in the season, averaging 6.1 yards per carry in recent games. However, uncertainty looms over the health of leading wide receiver Trey Wallace, who missed the last game due to injury.
As Penn State prepares for its title chase, recruiting takes a backseat this week, with Franklin prioritizing game preparation amidst signing day activities.
This weekend’s championship game is set to be a thrilling confrontation against one of college football’s elite programs.
