MSU Women’s Basketball Faces Tough Loss to Oregon at Home

MSU Women’s Basketball Falls Short Against Oregon, 63-59

East Lansing, MI – The Michigan State University women’s basketball team faced a tough challenge as they succumbed to the University of Oregon, 63-59, marking their first home loss of the season. The Spartans, ranked No. 16, struggled to recover from a significant early deficit and were unable to maintain their usual defensive prowess.

Oregon, unranked and sitting eighth in the Big Ten, seized control from the opening tip-off, establishing a commanding pace and keeping the Spartans scoreless until the 6:57 mark of the first quarter. Graduate guard Deja Kelly led the Ducks with 10 points while senior center Phillipina Kyei’s 6-foot-8 frame created problematic mismatches for MSU’s defense.

Despite a spirited effort in the second half, the Spartans’ attempts to close the gap fell short. While junior forward Grace VanSlooten managed to score eight points in the third quarter, every offensive spurt by MSU was quickly countered by Oregon. The gameplay was characterized by extended possessions, with the Ducks often forcing the Spartans to shoot at the last moment.

A significant shift occurred in the fourth quarter as MSU mounted a 10-1 scoring run, highlighted by impactful plays from graduate forward Julia Ayrault and junior guard Theryn Hallock. Nonetheless, despite outscoring Oregon 19-8 in the final period and narrowing the gap to just three points, MSU couldn’t complete the comeback against a strong start from the Ducks.

Ayrault led the Spartans with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Theryn Hallock and Grace VanSlooten each contributed 12 points. Graduate guard Nyla Hampton contributed with six steals, reflecting the team’s defensive effort.

After the match, head coach Robyn Fralick emphasized the loss as a learning opportunity for her squad, who now holds a record of 17-4 overall and 7-3 in conference play. The Spartans will aim to rebound on February 2 against Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois.
