Press Article: Mental Health Support for Agricultural Workers in Oregon Bolstered by New Legislation
SALEM, Ore. — Mental health support for farmers and agricultural workers in Oregon is becoming more accessible thanks to the AgriStress Helpline, a dedicated service aimed at addressing the unique mental health challenges faced by these vital communities. Dr. Allison Myers, a professor at Oregon State University, emphasized that the helpline serves individuals from farming, ranching, fishing, and forestry backgrounds, along with their families.
Recent data shows that suicide rates in Oregon, particularly among agricultural and natural resource communities, are alarmingly high. "Members of our agriculture and natural resource communities are particularly burdened," Myers stated, highlighting the urgent need for targeted support.
In 2023, the Oregon legislature allocated $300,000 to establish an OSU endowment for the helpline, which has since reached agricultural workers in 23 of the state’s 36 counties. Rep. Bobby Levy lauded the helpline’s early success, asserting that even saving a single life is of paramount importance.
To further enhance the helpline’s sustainability, Senate Bill 779 seeks an additional $2 million from the general fund, with Levy and Sen. Todd Nash as chief sponsors. Nash explained the financial strategy behind the proposal, noting that the helpline’s annual cost of $68,000, invested in Oregon State’s fund, could yield a guaranteed return of 4%.
However, the proposal faces scrutiny from opponents who question the use of general funds for the helpline’s support. The bill is currently under review in the Senate Committee on Judiciary, with public testimony forthcoming.
As discussions continue, the AgriStress Helpline remains a crucial resource for fostering mental health awareness and support among Oregon’s agricultural workers.
