Beloved Oregon Mid-Century Modern Homebuilder Bob Rummer, Notable for His Enduring Legacy, Passes Away at 97

Celebrated Developer Bob Rummer Passes at 97, Leaving a Legacy in Midcentury Modern Homes

Bob Rummer, the iconic developer known for introducing midcentury modern tract houses with glass-enclosed atriums to Oregon, passed away on Friday at the age of 97. Rummer’s innovative designs transformed homebuyers’ aspirations for indoor-outdoor living, establishing a distinct market in areas including Southwest Portland’s Bohmann Park and Beaverton’s Oak Hills Historic District.

Rummer was recognized not only for his architectural vision but also for his hands-on approach in site selection and quality control. He built single-level homes characterized by soaring ceilings and ample glass, adapting to market trends throughout his career from 1962 until 1977. Rummer’s inspiration stemmed from influential developers like Joseph Eichler, mirroring the post-World War II optimism and suburban expansion.

Throughout his life, Rummer remained engaged with the community, even revisiting the idea of building homes again in 2022. He famously noted, upon witnessing the skyrocketing prices of his original homes, “Who can afford to pay $1.2 million for a house?” His commitment to affordable housing and modern design continued to resonate, culminating in the launch of Rummer Development in 2024, aimed at creating future-forward homes inspired by his legacy.

Remembered fondly by colleagues and community members as a pioneer and “rock star” of the industry, Rummer’s work altered the local real estate landscape, inspiring generations of homeowners who value his minimalist and functional design. He leaves behind a rich legacy of livable architecture that continues to flourish, with his homes now attracting designers and enthusiasts alike.

Rummer is survived by his daughter, Cynthia J. Morton of Beaverton.
