Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Oregon’s West Columbia River Gorge
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the West Columbia River Gorge, Clackamas County Cascade Foothills, and the Cascade Foothills of Marion and Linn counties, effective from Saturday at 1:48 p.m. until Monday at 4 a.m. Snow accumulations are expected to range between 2 and 7 inches, prompting warnings about slick and hazardous road conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
Residents and travelers are advised to prepare for winter driving hazards by maintaining a winter emergency kit in their vehicles. Essential items include flashlights, batteries, blankets, shovels, water, non-perishable food, and tire chains. Caution is urged as walking surfaces may also become slippery.
The weather service highlights important winter driving tips in light of seasonal challenges, which are responsible for over 6,000 fatalities and nearly 480,000 injuries annually. Motorists are encouraged to adjust their driving habits, slow down, and assume icy conditions on roadways in near-freezing temperatures. It’s best to avoid unnecessary travel during severe conditions. If travel is essential, choose routes with minimal trees and power lines to reduce risks from potential falling hazards.
In case of becoming stranded, the weather service advises maintaining calm, notifying someone of your location, and signaling for help by attaching a cloth to your vehicle. Visibility can be enhanced by using dome lights and hazard flashers.
Lastly, individuals should stay informed about current road conditions before heading out and maintain a safe distance from snow plows during their routes. Adhering to these guidelines will help ensure safety and reduce accident risks during the challenging winter months.
