Thousands of people in Southern California protested mass deportations planned by President Donald Trump on Sunday. Protesters in downtown Los Angeles blocked a major freeway for several hours, calling for immigration reform and carrying banners with slogans like “Nobody is illegal.” The demonstration started on Olvera Street before moving to City Hall. The 101 freeway was shut down by the afternoon, causing traffic backups in both directions. It took more than five hours for the freeway to fully reopen. There were no reports of arrests by the California Highway Patrol or the Los Angeles Police Department during the protest.
In Riverside, hundreds of people protested with passing motorists honking and shouting in support. In San Diego, hundreds rallied near the convention center. In Texas, demonstrations were held in Dallas against recent arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Approximately 1,600 people gathered between two rallies, carrying Mexican and American flags and expressing outrage at the administration’s rhetoric and increased deportations.
Signs at the protests included messages like “Immigrants Make America Great.” The widespread protests reflect the growing concern and opposition to Trump’s immigration policies and actions.
