Oregon Mourns the Passing of Longest-Serving State Lawmaker, Peter Courtney
The Oregon State Senate was filled with a sense of loss and remembrance on Wednesday as lawmakers, lobbyists, political staffers, and family gathered to honor the late Peter Courtney, the longest-serving state lawmaker in Oregon history. Known for his booming voice and unparalleled oratory skills, Courtney was described as a Salem legend who embodied the “Oregon Way” of governance characterized by compromise and empathy.
During the memorial service, speakers from both political parties shared stories of Courtney’s impactful leadership and dedication to serving the people of Oregon. Former Democratic Governor Kate Brown recalled Courtney’s advocacy for Oregonians with mental illness and his efforts to improve conditions at the Oregon State Hospital. Courtney’s son, Sean Courtney, spoke of his father’s selflessness and commitment to helping those in need.
Throughout his 38 years in the Legislature, including 20 years as Senate President, Courtney left a lasting legacy of compassion and service. His influence was evident in the diverse group of individuals who came together to honor him, showing the impact he had on the lives of many Oregonians.
As Governor Tina Kotek aptly summarized, Courtney’s journey from West Virginia to Oregon, his dedication to fighting for the vulnerable, and his ability to connect with people on a personal level made him a unique and beloved figure in Oregon politics. While his physical presence may be gone, his spirit and legacy continue to resonate within the walls of the Oregon State Capitol.
