Western Oregon Softball Claims First Win of the Season with Dramatic Walk-Off
IRVINE, Calif. — The Western Oregon University softball team secured their first victory of the season with a thrilling 1-0 win against Dominican University (CA) during the final game of the Concordia Kickoff on Sunday. Kennedy Abbas shined in the pitcher’s circle, delivering a one-hit gem while Isabelle Lewis provided the decisive blow with a walk-off RBI double.
As the teams entered the seventh inning tied at zero, Abbas demonstrated remarkable poise on the mound, retiring 14 of the final 15 batters faced. After allowing a lead-off single in the third inning, she did not surrender another hit, finishing the game with two strikeouts, one walk, and only three base runners—an impressive feat for the sophomore.
The crucial moment came in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter Lexic Baumgartner began the inning with a walk, allowing Hope Bodak, who she replaced, to advance to second base after a successful steal. A subsequent flyout put the Wolves one out away from a potential loss, but Lewis stepped up to the plate and delivered on a 2-2 pitch, hitting a clutch double to left field that brought Bodak home for the game-winning run.
Leading the offensive charge for Western Oregon, Emily Zimmerman recorded a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Lewis contributed with two hits, including the game-winner. The Wolves’ next challenge awaits as they continue their California road trip, facing California State University, Dominguez Hills in a doubleheader on Tuesday, followed by another doubleheader against CU Irvine on Wednesday. The Wolves aim to build on this momentum as the season progresses.
