Oregon legislators voice concerns as Elon Musk and DOGE granted access to Treasury information

Lawmakers in Oregon and across the country are expressing concerns over Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) being granted access to the federal government’s payment system and sensitive databases. Over 1,000 protesters gathered at a rally in front of the Treasury building in Washington, D.C., to voice their opposition to Musk’s takeover of the federal government.

Musk and DOGE have quickly made significant changes, including shutting down USAID and gaining access to classified materials. Lawmakers, led by Senator Ron Wyden, are particularly alarmed by Musk’s access to the U.S. Treasury’s payment system, responsible for billions of transactions yearly. They fear potential misuse of taxpayer funds and a breach of sensitive data.

Senator Wyden and other lawmakers have urged people to come together to prevent Musk and Trump from making unauthorized changes that could affect critical programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. They argue that allowing Musk access to such sensitive data poses a risk to Americans’ privacy and the country’s security.

Despite claims that Musk and DOGE only have “read-only” access, many lawmakers remain skeptical. A group representing retirees and union workers has taken legal action against the Treasury Department to stop them from sharing personal and financial information with DOGE. The presence of DOGE members at other government agencies like the Department of Education and the General Services Administration has raised additional concerns about the extent of Musk’s influence within the federal government.
