Scott Barnes, Oregon State’s Athletic Director, discusses Trent Bray’s role as defensive coordinator, potential as a football GM, and upcoming changes to spring football.

Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes has made the unconventional decision to have his football coach, Trent Bray, also take on the role of defensive coordinator. While the CEO model is typically favored for football coaches, Barnes believes Bray is the perfect fit for the dual role. Discussions about Bray potentially returning as a position coach began midway through the 2024 season, and former Idaho head coach Robb Akey has been named as Bray’s right-hand man.

Barnes is supportive of Bray’s vision to be more hands-on with the players and play calling on the defensive end. While FBS programs are increasingly hiring general managers, Oregon State does not have one for football, which Barnes states is Bray’s decision to make. However, the athletics staff is being built out to oversee revenue-sharing initiatives, with the recent hiring of Justin Johnson as the NIL business manager.

As discussions about changes to spring football arise, some coaches are concerned about the scouting opportunities it presents for rival coaches looking for transfer possibilities. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has even considered moving to the NFL’s offseason model. Barnes acknowledges the risks of playing a spring game but emphasizes that any decision regarding spring football changes will ultimately be Bray’s.

Overall, Barnes is focused on developing players and supporting Bray in his dual role as head coach and defensive coordinator. The growth of the NIL program and potential changes to spring football will be guided by Bray’s leadership. Subscribe to OregonLive.com to stay updated on Oregon State football developments.
