Multnomah County to provide shelter for homeless during cold weather on Wednesday night

As cold temperatures and the possibility of snow loom over the Portland-area, Multnomah County, Washington County, and Clackamas County have all announced plans to open emergency cold weather shelters to provide refuge for those in need. Multnomah County will operate six emergency shelters, including a new one at the Charles Jordan Community Center, until at least noon on Thursday, with a total of 285 people staying in shelters on Monday night and 356 on Tuesday night. Washington County has opened two emergency shelters that will remain open indefinitely for those seeking warmth and shelter. Clackamas County has been operating a shelter in Oregon City for most of the winter and will continue to do so nightly. All shelters are open to pets and those with disabilities, and transportation to the shelters is available by calling 2-1-1 or through TriMet.

The Salvation Army’s winter beds still have space available for those seeking shelter, and hot meals are provided at the Washington County shelters. Additionally, if someone is in danger due to being unsheltered in extreme cold, individuals are encouraged to call 911, or the non-emergency police number for welfare checks. These measures are being taken by the counties to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations during the harsh winter weather conditions.
